Extreme Classroom Makeover | Oak Ridge Associated Universities

About

In May 2009, Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) announced its first ever winner of an Extreme Classroom Makeover.  The Extreme Makeover contest invited East Tennessee middle school science teachers to submit videos explaining why they and their students deserved a $25,000 infusion of technology and facility upgrades.

As part of the launch of ORAU’s Center for Science Education, the Extreme Classroom Makeover provided a new and creative way for ORAU to further its decades-long commitment to furthering the cause of science education.

The 2009 winner, Jenny Alvey of Gresham Middle School in Knoxville, kept a blog in 2009-10 about her journey starting with the moment she got a surprise visit to her class by a contingent from ORAU and the Knox County Schools Superintendent’s Office.

In 2010, the second annual Extreme Classroom Makeover Contest was won by Jordan Haney, a 5th grade teacher at Rocky Hill Elementary School in Knoxville. Mr. Haney has started his own blog to keep track of his purchases and his plans for taking his classroom to a new level with the help of technology including iPads and iPod Touches.
